Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc. is an autonomous subsidiary of Unilever that manufactures ice cream, frozen yoghurt and sorbets that are sold worldwide. Ben and Jerry’s is famous for its natural ice cream and unique flavors.

CSR priorities and messages

Ben & Jerry’s has been founded on a corporate concept of linked prosperity and contributes around $1.1 million annually to employee-led philanthropy projects. Through its Ben & Jerry’s Foundation, the company continues to donate to social causes to benefit different communities.


1978 – Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield open their first ice cream scoop shop in Burlington, Vermont. The first shop was set up through only $12,000 investment and in a renovated gas station.

1979 – Ben and Jerry celebrate their first-year anniversary and hold the first Free Cone day: free ice cream for everyone all day long. Free Cone day is still held annually nowadays across scoop stores.

1985 – The Ben & Jerry’s Foundation is established. Ben and Jerry offer 7.5% of the business’ annual profits to communal projects.

1988- Ben and Jerry win President Reagan’s “U.S. Small Business Persons of the Year” in White House.

2000 – Ben & Jerry’s becomes a subsidiary of Unilever and a Board of Directors is established to provide independent guidance to Ben & Jerry’s.

2002- Ben & Jerry’s partners with Matthews Band and SaveOurEnvironment.org to fight global warming.

2013 – Ben & Jerry’s supports mandatory GMO labeling legislation as it commits to source all their products GMO free.

2016 – Ben & Jerry’s launches non-dairy line of ice creams made with Almond milk.
